I know that Game Of Thrones, Season 3, was filmed in Essaouira, and nearly everyone I meet always talks about it, but even so; I tried to keep away from looking at too many images or reading too much about it as I just wanted to spend a few days actually there to get a real feel of the 18th Century city; once known as Mogador.
I sat down earlier and wrote a long blog post, which; even for me was a bit too much bla bla, and we all know that a picture can speak a thousand words, right? So, I have opted to show you some of the photographs I took during my stay there, and I really hope I have managed to capture even a small percentage of how beautiful, quaint and quite otherworldly it really is.
A few titbits of advice on Essaouira...
A few things I will just quickly mention - if you are planning to go there - it would be CRIMINAL of me not to let you know - you MUST try to get to the beach and seaport area at sunrise and/or sunset - absolutely stunning - it will take your breath away I PROMISE!
Secondly, if you like Italian food even a little bit - DEFINITELY go to Pasta Baladin in the medina - it's easy enough to find and it is a gem of a restaurant - great service, food is just yummmmmmmm (my mouth is watering just thinking about it - do try the Panna Cotta - OMG!!), and it's really affordable with a laid back atmosphere.
There is a very large community of cats in Essaouira - as far as I can tell very friendly but oh my goodness are they all fatties or what! I have never seen such large sized cats ever before so they are quite a sight to see - clearly, they must have easy access to all the fish! ;)
I know Essaouira is well known for its' water sports, but it was too cold for me to venture that far into the sea. For those of you braver than me, however, there are plenty of places in the medina that offer all water-related activities.
The days tend to be warm, with it getting significantly cooler in the evenings so do wrap up if you are wandering out anytime after 5pm :)
Feel free to ask me more...
If you have any other questions about Essaouira, feel free to leave me a comment below and I would be happy to help! :)
I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I did taking them :)
Have any of you been to Essaouira? Or plan to go? I would love to hear your thoughts! :)
